On a platform where char is signed (all except RISC OS, OS/2 and VMS,
according to Inform's header file), if you use a non-ASCII character in a
dictionary word, the dictionary word is corrupted, amd the compiler may
crash. The problem can be worked around by using @ escapes instead of literal
